English composer and cellist; b. in London, 31 July 1808; d. Portland, Me., 18 Aug. 1896; imigrated to the United States in 1849; resided in Richmond, Va., Baltimore, Md., and Portland, Me.
Anglo-American musician and composer; best known for the music to "Kathleen Mavourneen."

Son of a violinist. Worked at various times as violoncellist, choir-boy, member of a travelling circus, commercial traveller, music critic for Metropolitan Monthly Magazine. Composer of "Kathleen Mavourneen". Born in England and moved to United States in 1849 where he worked as conductor and teacher.
