Biographical History
The American Conference for Irish Studies (ACIS), formerly the American Committee for Irish Studies, was founded in 1960 by Lawrence McCaffrey, Gilbert Cahill, and Emmet Larkin, all of whom would go on to serve as president of the organization. ACIS was created as an interdisciplinary scholarly organization dedicated to promoting the study of Ireland and the Irish.
As of 2023, the organization had approximately 800 members internationally, including the United States, Ireland, and Canada, and it held an annual conference each spring, in addition to regional meetings in the United States throughout the year. Both national and regional meetings included plenary speakers, academic sessions in all fields of Irish Studies, poetry and fiction readings, films, and performances of Irish music and plays. The ACIS also sponsored joint sessions with the American Historical Association and the Modern Language Association at their annual conventions.
