Biographical History

The Black Panther Party was founded in Oakland, California in 1966 by Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale. The philosophy of the Black Panthers, known as their ten-point program, combined Marxist socialism and black nationalism with demands for land, housing, education, justice and peace. By 1969 the Black Panthers had become known nationally.

From the guide to the Black Panther Party FBI file, 1967-1969, (The New York Public Library. Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, Manuscripts, Archives and Rare Books Division.)

The Bay Area Black Panther Party Collection was donated on November 1, 1991 by Douglas Daniels, who was at the time an Associate Professor of Black Studies at the University of California at Santa Barbara. The collection was gathered by Richard Aoki, a founding member of the Bay Area chapter and the only Asian American to hold a formal leadership position as Field Marshall. Particularly significant to this collection are several first issues of the Black Panther party newspaper, flyers from the Huey Newton Defense Fund (Committee), documents and handbills from Eldridge Cleaver's U.S. Presidential bid with the Peace and Freedom Party, and the political manifesto from the Lowndes County Freedom Organization (Alabama), the logo for which became the Black Panther's national symbol.

The Black Panther Party was an African American political and activist organization founded in 1965 in Oakland, California by Bobby Seale and Huey P. Newton. An outgrowth of the "Black Power" movement, the Black Panther Party focused its efforts on community activism and social community programs. The organization was most active during the 1960s and 1970s.
