Gardiner, Hampden Sidney, 1859-1884

Sergeant Hampden Sidney Gardiner (born January 18, 1859, Philadelhpia, Pa.-died June 12, 1884, Canada) was a member of the Lady Franklin Bay Expedition, 1881-1884.

Gardiner recorded weather and tidal data and specialized in making instruments. He rebuilt a chronograph, an instrument for observing the stars in connection with Earth's rotation. Although he broke his leg in November, 1881 and was immobile for nearly three months, A. W. Greely said Gardiner's "spirits never failed him." He died of starvation at Camp Clay. Other members of the expedition buried Gardiner at Ice Fort, but that place was eventually carried out to sea.
