Joseph Hirshhorn (1899-1981) was an art collector from New York City.

Hirshhorn was an art collector; New York, N.Y. The Armory Show of 1913 was a seminal exhibition of modern art held in the 69th St. Armory, N.Y. It travelled to Boston and Chicago.
Joseph H. Hirshhorn (1899-1981) was a self-made financier and philanthropist who immigrated at the age of four to the United States with his family from Latvia. He began collecting art at an early age, eventually developing a keen interest in contemporary art. His donation of 6,000 works of art and financial support led to the establishment of the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden by an act of Congress in 1966. Groundbreaking on the National Mall in Washington, DC, occurred in 1969, and the museum, a part of the Smithsonian Institution, opened to the public in 1974. The museum's collection and programs focus on modern (20th century) and contemporary art.
