Raymond G. Carey, professor of history at the University of D enver (Colo.), taught a seminar in historical method, in which his students used primary sources.
Raymond Giddens Carey (1901-1972) served as a member of the faculty of the University of Denver, Denver, Colo. from 1945 to 1971; he also served as chair of the History Dept. from 1945 to 1958. Carey researched the Sand Creek Massacre of 1864. In this battle, the troops of the Colorado Third Volunteer Regiment commanded by Colonel John M. Chivington attacked the Cheyenne and Arapaho people encamped on the banks of the Sand Creek, near Lamar, Colo. Over 150 Native Americans were killed.
