Biographical History

Zachariah Ferris was a tanner and Quaker minister from Wilmington, Delaware. He was born to Zachariah and Sarah Ferris of New Milford, Connecticut, about the year 1717. Between 1739 and 1741 Ferris moved to Wilmington, Delaware, as did his brothers David and John. There he worked as a tanner. In 1741 Ferris married Elizabeth Scott, daughter of Patrick and Eleanor Scott. The couple had five children, three of whom (Hannah, John, and Elizabeth) lived to adulthood. Ferris was an active minister in the Society of Friends, and towards the end of his life he traveled extensively among Quaker meetings on the east coast of North America. He died in early January 1803 at the home of his son John.
