Biographical History

Led by George Armstrong Custer, the Seventh Cavalry surprised an encampment of Cheyenne near present-day Cheyenne, Okla., on Nov. 27, 1868.

Known as the Battle of Washita, the conflict resulted in few cavalry casualties; among them was Capt. Louis M. Hamilton, who was killed as the attack commenced.
