Biographical History

Samuel Meredith (1741 – February 10, 1817) was an American merchant and statesman from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Born in Philadelphia, he attended Doctor Allison's Academy there before engaging in mercantile pursuits. Meredith served in the Revolutionary War as major and lieutenant colonel of the Third Battalion of Associators in 1776, was promoted to brigadier general of Pennsylvania Militia in April 1777 before resigning in 1778. Twice a member of the Pennsylvania Colonial Assembly, he served as a delegate to the Continental Congress from Pennsylvania between 1786 to 1788. In August 1789, Meredith was appointed surveyor of the port of Philadelphia; the following month, Meredith was the first United States Treasurer appointed under the Constitution, serving from September 11, 1789, until his resignation December 1, 1801.

After resigning, Meredith retired to his country home, Belmont Manor, near Pleasant Mount, Pennsylvania. He died at Belmont Manor and was interred in the family cemetery there.
