Biographical History

The University of Rhode Island began offering courses in library procedure through its Extension Division in Providence in 1957. In 1963 this program was developed onto one leading to the Masters of Library Science with the establishment of the Graduate School of Library Science. The name was changed a year later to the Graduate Library School. In 1969 the School was moved from Providence to the Kingston Campus. In 1984 the name was changed to the Graduate School of Library and Information Studies. After restructuring in 1985, it's status was changed from that of being its own School to being included as a department with a director within the College of Arts and Sciences. In addition to the Kingston and Providence campuses, the School, through its Regional Program, offers courses at various locations throughout New England.
