John Mackenzie Cory was Chief of the Circulation Department (renamed the Branch Libraries in 1966) of The New York Public Library from 1951-1963. He was appointed Deputy Director of The New York Public Library in 1963, and served as Director from 1971-1978.
Benjamin Adams was Chief of the Circulation Department (renamed the Branch Libraries in 1966) of The New York Public Library from 1909-1918. He had served as Assistant Chief since 1904, and prior to that worked for Brooklyn Public Library.
Jean Godfrey was Chief of the Circulation Department (renamed the Branch Libraries in 1966) of The New York Public Library from 1963-1970. Prior to that she was Superintendent of the Extension Division (1952-1954), Coordinator of Manhattan Branches (1954-1957) and Assistant Chief (1957-1963).
Franklin F. Hopper was Chief of the Circulation Department (renamed the Branch Libraries in 1966) of The New York Public Library from 1919-1941. Arthur Bostwick (1860-1942) was Head Librarian of the New York Free Circulating Libraries from 1895-1897. In 1901 he was hired by John Shaw Billings, first Director of The New York Public Library, to establish NYPL's Circulation Department (renamed the Branch Libraries in 1966). He was Chief of the Circulation Department until 1909 when he left to become head of the St. Louis Public Library.
