The North Carolina State University Faculty and Staff Collection was created in 1996 to centralize material relating to activities of University employees. This collection currently contains the files of Hilbert A. Fisher and William Norwood Hicks.

The North Carolina State University alumni and student collection was created by the Special Collections Research Center in 1996 to centralize future material relating to activities of University students. It was intended for this collection to have the value of a representative sample of student activities. In addition, it was designed to focus on future acquisitions, so no attempt was made to reorganize similar existing collections into the NCSU Alumni and Student Collection.

The first annual catalog for North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University), published in June 1890, contained lists of faculty and freshman students. By the 1910s there was a separate directory that listed both faculty and students. By the 1930-1931 academic year, faculty and staff were listed in a separate volume. This practice continued until the 1988-1989 academic year when both directories were combined into a single volume.

Raleigh is the capital of North Carolina and home to one of the state's largest universities, North Carolina State University. NCSU was established as a land grant university that opened in 1889 with one building. In 2008, the university has hundreds of buildings on over 2,100 acres of land, serving over 31,000 students and faculty.
