Biographical History

Director and Librarian (later President and Librarian) L. W. Towner initiated the preparation of organizational charts for insertion in the annual report.

Reports were issued annually until the 1984-85 fiscal year, when they became biennial. Title varies: Annual report of the Director and Librarian, 1962-1975; Annual report of the President and Librarian, 1976-1977; Annual report of the Newberry Library ... 1979-1983; The Newberry Library annual report, 1984; The Newberry Library biennial report, 1986- .

Through 1942, the Trustee Committee on Books had final say on Library collection development policies and acquisitions.

Librarians W. N. C. Carlton and George B. Utley corresponded frequently with Book Committee members Horace H. Martin, Frederic Ives Carpenter, A. C. McLaughlin, John A. Spoor, Horace S. Oakley, W. A. Craigie, and C. J. Hambleton regarding particular purchases and the direction of Library acquisitions.

From the description of Librarian/Trustee Committee on Books correspondence, 1909-1949. (Newberry Library). WorldCat record id: 26521455

From its founding in 1887 until 1992, the Newberry Library has had seven Librarians, including William F. Poole, 1887-1894; John Vance Cheney, 1894-1909; W. N. C. Carlton, 1909-1920; George B. Utley, 1920-1942; Stanley Pargellis, 1942-1962; Lawrence W. Towner, 1962-1986; and Charles T. Cullen, 1986-.

Appointed in 1887 by Newberry estate Trustees Blatchford and Bradley to organize the new library, William F. Poole worked under close Trustee supervision. Until 1914, when Trustee President E. W. Blatchford died, most aspects of library administration were controlled by the Trustees, a practice that diminished steadily, first in personnel matters and library organization, and later in book selection, under librarians Carlton, Utley, and Pargellis. The transfer of administrative responsibility to the Librarian was formalized in Bylaws revisions during the Towner years and is reflected in job-title changes: Director and Librarian, 1965-1974, President and Librarian, 1975-present.

From the description of Records, 1858-[ongoing] (bulk 1887-[ongoing]). (Newberry Library). WorldCat record id: 26442706

Formal monthly statistical compilations were initiated by W. N. C. Carlton and carried on by George B. Utley.

From the description of Letters of appreciation, 1911-1929. (Newberry Library). WorldCat record id: 26521478

Newsletters written by library employees for Newberry Library staff, volunteers and readers.

Although records suggest that a staff newsletter was envisioned in 1916, it may not have been published or distributed. The first extant newsletter, "Newberry News," started in 1943, was printed sporadically for almost twenty years. In May, 1969, "Newberry-ana" was started by President and Librarian Towner. It has continued to be issued monthly, quarterly and sporadically by various offices including President and Librarian, Events and Development.

From the description of Staff newsletters, 1943-[ongoing] (Newberry Library). WorldCat record id: 26521789

Prior to 1963, all library departments and divisions submitted monthly and annual reports to the Librarian. When an Associate Librarian for Library Operations was appointed in 1963, reports were directed to that office.

From the description of Departmental reports, 1918-1961. (Newberry Library). WorldCat record id: 26522026
