Biographical History
All of these projects primarily were efforts to document historic sites in New York. They included a Federally sponsored historic sites survey (ca. 1936-1939); preliminary work on the Historical Album of New York State (1941-1942) - a cooperative project between the Works Progress Administration's New York Writer's Project and the Division of Archives and History; and a resurvey of historic sites conducted by the Division (ca. 1947-1949).
In 1925 the Commissioner of Education appointed the Executive Committee on the 150th Anniversary of the American Revolution to develop a plan for statewide observances of events that occurred during 1776 and 1777 in New York. Peter Nelson, Supervisor of Public Records in the Division of Archives and History, was selected as Executive Secretary of the committee and charged with planning the State's role in observances designated by the committee.
The Legislature provided funding for statewide celebrations of the 150th anniversary of the American Revolution under the supervision of the Education Department in 1926 and 1927. In 1928 the Legislature established a committee and allocated funds for observances of the 1779 Sullivan-Clinton campaign against the Iroquois tribes.
This information was gathered by the Division of Archives and History in response to a letter sent by the Commissioner of Education to all boards of education and school administrators on March 18, 1936.
The Historical Survey's goals were to locate and inventory public records and private manuscripts, identify marked and unmarked historic sites and structures, identify local cemeteries, and prepare brief historical essays. The project provided temporary employment to individuals on the Saratoga County relief rolls, and was conducted under the general supervision of the Division of Archives and History.
These records were collected by State Historians James Sullivan and Alexander C. Flick (from 1923 on) in response to a joint resolution of the New York State Senate and Assembly to "collect, collate, compile, edit, and prepare for publication sufficient material, statistics, and data for a history of the State of New York in the World War." Because no funds were appropriated for this work, the envisioned publication was never completed.
The State Historian relied on officially appointed local historians to collect and forward information relating to their communities' roles in the war. Only two-thirds of the state's communities provided the requested information, and very few veterans from New York City are represented in the series. There are no files for Bronx, Queens, or Richmond counties.
These observances or pageants depicted were part of the statewide celebration of the 150th anniversary of events in 1776 and 1777 authorized by the Legislature in 1926 and 1927.
These markers were partially financed under annual appropriations of the state legislature beginning in 1926 as part of the official celebration of the 150th anniversary of the American Revolution.
