Biographical History
Revolutionary soldier and legislator.
Charleston, South Carolina merchant, plantation owner, Revolutionary War general, South Carolina state Representative and Governor, and U.S. Continental Congressman. In January 1776 Gadsden resigned from the Continental Congress in order to accept a commission as a brigadier general and commander of the provincial forces in South Carolina.
Native of Charleston, S.C. Merchant and planter. Captain of the Charleston Artillery Company during the Cherokee Campaign of 1761. Representative in the Commons House of Assembly (1757-1765) and Royal Assembly (1765-1775). South Carolina representative to the Stamp Act Congress in New York, 1765. Representative in the First Continental Congress (1774-1776) and Provincial Congresses (1775-1776). Representative in the General Assembly (1776-1780 and 1782-1784). Vice President of South Carolina (1778-1783). Member of the state convention which ratified the United States Constitution in 1788.
