Biographical History

Eugene Dominic Genovese (1930-2014) was an American historian of the American South and American slavery. He was noted for bringing a Marxist perspective to the study of power, class and relations between planters and slaves in the South. His book, Roll, Jordan, Roll: The World the Slaves Made (1974), won the Bancroft Prize. He later abandoned the Left and Marxism, and embraced traditionalist conservatism. Late in his career, he and his wife Betsey, whom he married in 1969 and who was also a scholar collaborating with him on some works, converted to Roman Catholicism.
