South Carolina state legislator and governor. Edward Rutledge also served as a member of the U.S. Continental Congress and was a signer of the Declaration of Independence. In 1779 he was re-elected to the Continental Congress but did not attend due to illness. In February of 1779 Rutledge served as an officer of a company which defeated British forces at Beaufort and Port Royal, S.C.
