Suggested by two unidentified lines of poetry: "Fresh is the snow, and beautiful the footprints left there ... ", and "Of fireflies and a summer night ..." Composed 1959. First performance New York, 12 February 1961, Orchestra of America, Richard Korn conductor.--Cf. Fleisher Collection.
Originally composed as the slow movement of the composer's String Quartet No. 1, 1952. Transcribed 1956. First performance American Music Festival, New York, January 1958, Mannes College Orchestra, Maurice Peress conductor.--Cf. Fleisher Collection.
Commissioned by the Merry-Go-Rounders Ballet Company. Originally composed as a full ballet, scored for 2 pianos, 1963. First performance of ballet YMHA, New York, 30 December 1963, Merry-Go-Rounders Ballet Company with choreography by Sophie Maslow. These 2 movements orchestrated 1964. First performance of suite at the New York World's Fair, 1 September 1964, Ventnor Festival Orchestra, Russell Stanger conductor.
