Born 12 February 1824 in a log cabin in New York, Chauncey Stokes began helping his father in the carpentry trade at age 16. As mentioned on p. 19 of this autobiography, Stokes moved to Colorado in 1871 with the party that formed a colony in Longmont, Boulder County. He continued in the building construction work in Denver, then in 1875 opened a lumberyard in Boulder and did architectural work in Boulder.
The Silver Lake basin is a major source of water for Boulder, Colo. The Boulder Daily Camera printed an article on 23 Apr. 1953 about a record snowfall at Silver Lake which occurred during a storm in April, 1921.
Hikes at the Arapaho Glacier were held for a number of years. The Boulder Chamber of Commerce organized the hikes annually on the second Sunday in August from 1939 through 1976. Laurence Paddock notes that "over the years, more than 14,000 persons from carried infants to 80-year-olds took part, with the only two injuries reported in 1954."
Records of Boulder's weather have been kept since 1897, mainly by volunteer observers. Until the city's fire dept. took on the task in 1947, the Boulder weather station was in someone's home or on the campus of the Univ. of Colorado. In 1970, observations were made by staff at the National Bureau of Standards in Boulder; the N.B.S. discontinued doing so in April, 1978. The Daily Camera found the weather data useful, and thus accumulated the materials in this collection.
The Temple Court No. 10, Order of Amaranth, was organized in 1951. It was the 10th such group in Colorado.
The Poorman mine was located near Caribou (Colo.), a silver mining community in southwestern Boulder County. The Poorman or Poor Man, located in 1869, was one of the early mines of the Caribou area. Neil D. McKenzie, donor of the materials in this folder, was associated with the mine for many years. He was a major owner and stockholder, and was manager of the mine while it was owned by a Scottish firm and later for the Poorman Mining Company.
The Poorman Mining Company, a syndicate headed by former Colorado U.S. Senator Horace A. W. Tabor, purchased the mine in May of 1888 for $450,000. (Source: historical note in this file.).
The church is on 63rd Street south of Nelson Road.
According to the Colorado USGenWeb Archives website:
"The Monarch No. 2 Coal Mine Memorial is located northwest of Broomfield, Colorado on the south side of U. S. Highway 36. Travel west from Denver on Highway 36 towards Boulder, Colorado from Interstate I-25. Go approximately 7 miles to the Broomfield exit. Travel another 2 miles to the Flat Iron Crossing West exit. The Memorial will be on you right, or west side of the road, along side the roadway just after pass over the creek.
"On January 20, 1936 a blast, believed to have been caused when a spark ignited coal dust, killed eight men working the night shift in the Monarch Mine No. 2. The body of mule boss Joe C. Jaramillo was never found. The theory is that Mr. Jaramillo was right at the point of the explosion when it occurred, explaining why his body was never recovered. Due to the dangerous nature of the search operation, the search for Mr. Jaramillo was called off and the company placed a granite gravestone at the entrance and permanently closed the Monarch No. 2 Mine.
"A development company purchased the land containing the memorial and the Flat Iron Crossing Mall was built on the land. The marker had to be moved to make way for a new highway exit. The developers built a 17-acre park named after the former land owner, Frank Varra, and relocated the memorial marker and headstone. This park was dedicated June 27, 2000 and has been turned over to the City & County of Broomfield."

When its location moved to a larger facility at 9th and Canyon, the firm's name was Arnold Bros. Ford. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND: This house was built by the Delta Tau Delta fraternity and was used by them until 1989. Extensive renovation was undertaken, at a cost of more than one million dollars.
The American War Mothers was organized in 1917 and chartered by act of Congress on 16 Feb. 1925. It was a service organization. The Boulder chapter was formed in early 1926, when 33 mothers whose sons served in World War I met in the home of Mrs. Vesa A. Russell.

The Boulder Pow Wow began during an economic recession in 1936. It was preceded by the "First Annual Rodeo" on 15-17 July 1927 in Boulder. Its history was marked by community service and three name changes. In 1936, A. A. "Gov" Paddock, editor of the Boulder Daily Camera, and other civic leaders saw the need to lift the community out of the doldrums that followed the Great Depression. The result of an organizational meeting was an institution known as the Pay Dirt Pow Wow.
Its original purpose was to unite the miners of the mountains with the farmers and ranchers on the high plains in a community festival around Colorado Day (Aug. 1) that would raise the spirits of all in the Boulder valley. The miners' rock-drilling contest became a highlight of the Pow Wow; it faded from the festival's program in the early 1950s. A queen, Miss Pow Wow, and ladies in waiting were selected for many years. A riding and roping club staged rodeo-type exhibitions during the early Pow Wows in a pasture at what became 28th and Mapleton Sts.
The land for the Pow Wow was purchased from Boulder rancher Rollie Leonard. Erecting the bleachers was a major event each year. The Rollie Leonard Arena built there was acclaimed throughout the rodeo circuit as one of the best arenas for the sport. In 1939, a regional horse show and professional rodeo, sanctioned by the Rodeo Cowboys Association, were added to the Pow Wow Days celebration. Most of the champions of rodeo competed, and the horse show grew over the years.
The Pow Wow board of directors served the community by allowing the use of its grounds for circuses, bonfires and 4-H activities, and by donating land for baseball fields, a YMCA facility, and a site for the relocated Boulder train depot. Meanwhile, the city of Boulder grew around the Pow Wow; the pasture became the center of the city, and the Pow Wow was squeezed out of its home.
After numerous setbacks, the Boulder Pow Wow found a new home in Louisville, and adopted a new name: the Boulder Valley Pow Wow. The Pow Wow, a non-profit organization, was directed by a 12-member unsalaried board and assisted by many volunteers. {Source: Boulder Valley Pow Wow History, in the 1981 program}.

Miss Antoine was born in Denver, Colo., and became a Metropolitan Opera, concert, and radio star. She sang before 1,500 people at Macky Auditorium during her senior year at the University of Colorado, Boulder, in 1929. Her debut at the Met was on 4 Jan. 1936. She died at age 64.
James Cowie was born in Scotland, and came to Boulder in 1878. He was connected with the Caribou Mine as mill assayer and assistant superintendant. A small group of wives and mothers on Gapter and Cherryvale Roads in east Boulder formed this organization, which was established at a meeting in the old Fairview School on 8 Jan. 1958. According to a 1-page history (in BHS 328 b093 f20), "the initial impetus for organizing was the lack of fire protection for the rural areas in which these people lived--just east of the Boulder city limits." The all-volunteer group later added a Tracking Team of men trained in rescue work.
