Biographical History
Conference hosted by the University of Guelph to celebrate the life and influence of Lucy Maud Montgomery, whose classic "Anne of Green Gables" was first published in 1908. An exhibition "Inside and Out: the Lives of L.M. Montgomery" will be at the Macdonald Stewart Art Centre, Oct. 24-Dec. 2008.
The Woolner jug was made in 1826 for Harriet Kemp, Montgomery's great-grandmother's sister, as a gift from her fiance. Harriet's sister, Sarah Kemp Woolner, brought it to P.E.I. from England in 1832. Lucy Woolner Macneill later passed it on to her granddaughter L.M. Montgomery in 1911 who took it with her to Leaskdale, Ont.
Woolner is also referred to as Woolnough in English books and stories.
The farmhouse belonged to Alexander and Lucy Macneill, grandparents of L.M. Montgomery. She lived here until the grandmother died in 1911, then left to be married. Here Montgomery also wrote four of her novels, the most famous one being "Anne of Green Gables"
L.M. Montgomery's agent sold the short story to "Good Housekeeping" for $400 in Aug. 1934. "I Know a Secret" was used as chapters 30-31 of "Anne of Ingleside"
Dr. Macdonald was on the teaching faculty of St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto and had his office in the Medical Arts Building.
The dogs were 98 years old when bought on Montgomery's honeymoon. Gog was broken - the first time at least - by Montgomery's grandson Cameron (Chester's son) in 1939. LMM actually had 2 pairs of dogs--"The Selected Journals of L.M. Montgomery", v. 5.
L.M. Montgomery spent nearly 10 years between 1926-1935 writing and making a home in Norval, a small village on the Credit River, 30 km. north of Toronto.
A musical biography of L.M. Montgomery featuring over two hours of original music, it had its world premiere at King's Playhouse in Georgetown, PEI, June 20, 2008, the exact 100th anniversary of the publication of "Anne of Green Gables"
Montgomery's daughter-in-law, Ruth Macdonald, and granddaughter, Kate Macdonald Butler, say they are denied their contracted share of 10 per cent of net receipts from the two TV movies which have been sold and broadcast in more than 200 countries and of merchandise licensed by Sullivan.
