The University of Texas has employed architects in various ways during a long succession of building campaigns that continue to this day.
The University hired architects as needed to design individual buildings from 1882-1900; Cass Gilbert was the first architect to receive the title "University Architect," serving from 1910 to 1922. From 1924 to 1968 the University operated under a team approach with one or more consulting architects and a staff supervising architect (Robert Leon White, 1924-1958). From 1969 to the present the University has hired individual architects for the design of campus buildings with the work coordinated through the Facilities Planning and Construction Division of the University of Texas System Office.
