Biographical History
The Provincias Internas were formally established by the Real Orden of August 22, 1776, to provide effective government of the northern region of New Spain. They included the provinces of Nueva Vizcaya, Coahuila, Texas, Nuevo México, Sinaloa, Sonora, Nuevo León, Nuevo Santander, and the Californias. These provinces were removed from the control of the viceroy and placed under the military and political government of a comandante general who was directly responsible to the king. In 1785 the authority of the viceroy over the Provincias Internas was partially restored and the Provincias Internas were divided into three military districts. In 1787 the three military commands were consolidated into two independent comandancias general, under the limited jurisdiction of the viceroy: the Provincias Internas del Oriente and the Provincias Internas del Occidente. In 1793 the two commands were reunited and made independent of the viceroy. The Californias, Nuevo Reino de León, and Nuevo Santander were separated and placed under the control of military governors directly subject to the viceroy. Remaining in the Provincias Internas were Sonora, Sinaloa, Nuevo México, Nueva Vizcaya, Coahuila, and Texas. In 1804, administrative difficulties resulted in an order to re-divide the Provincias Internas into the Provincias Internas de Oriente and the Provincias Internas de Occidente.
The 1804 order was not implemented until 1812; the arrangement continued in force until 1821, when Spain's authority over Mexico ended.
