Born January 11, 1921, Lynch (Harlan Co.), Kentucky. Professor of Economics at Duke University (1958-1977), where she was also James B. Duke Professor of Economics, Dean of the Woman's College, and University Vice President. She was appointed U.S. Secretary of Commerce in 1973.
