Biographical History

Franklin D. Roosevelt announced donation of his papers and land for a library in December 1938; fund raising and official approval commenced 1939; building was finished by summer 1940. The organization was dissolved in 1960.

Collecting area: Materials relating to the Roosevelt presidential administration and the Roosevelt family.

Records of governmental agencies and papers of individuals involved in the Roosevelt Administration (1933-1945); papers of Eleanor Roosevelt. Agencies include the American War Production Mission in China; President's Committee on Civil Service Improvement; and Secret Service records pertaining to the President's safety. Roosevelt's papers cover his entire career and include personal and family papers; there are also historical materials he collected on the Hudson Valley and on the U.S. Navy. Other individuals whose papers are held by the Library include Adolf A. Berle, John M. Carmody, Morris L. Cooke, Oscar Cox, Mordecai Ezekiel, Henry Field, Lorena Hickock, Harry L. Hopkins, Louis M. Howe, Henry Morgenthau, Jr., Leland Olds, Hilda Smith, Rexford Tugwell, Caroline Ware, and John Winant.
