Biographical History

Leonard Farbstein (October 12, 1902 – November 9, 1993) was an American lawyer and politician. A member of the Democratic Party, he notably served as the U.S. Representative from New York's 19th congressional district from 1957 to 1971.

Born in New York City, he served in the United States Coast Guard Reserve during World War I. At war's end, Farbstein graduated from High School of Commerce before attending City College of New York, Hebrew Union Teachers College, and the New York University School of Law, earning an LL.B. degree from the latter. Admitted to the bar, he worked in private practice in New York City. In 1932, Farbstein was elected to the first of fifteen terms in the New York State Assembly, representing the 4th district from 1933 to 1956.

Farbstein was elected as a Democrat to the 85th, 86th, 87th, 88th, 89th, 90th and 91st United States Congresses, holding office from January 3, 1957 to January 3, 1971. In 1966, Farbstein was a senior member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee. He was an open supporter of Lyndon B. Johnson's policy on the Vietnam War. In 1970, he was defeated for re-nomination by Bella Abzug.

Farbstein died in New York City, and was interred in Cedar Park Cemetery in Paramus, New Jersey.
