Soldier from South Carolina serving in the Palmetto Regiment during the Mexican War.
Johnson, professor of chemistry at Stanford University, was generally regarded as one of the major figures in 20th-century organic chemistry. He served as head of Stanford's chemistry department from 1960 to 1969, and after resigning that post, was appointed the Jackson-Wood Professor of Chemistry which he held until he became emeritus in 1978. He died in 1995.
