Biographical History

Stephen Joseph Scalise (born October 6, 1965) is an American engineer and politician. A member of the Republican Party, he has represented Louisiana's 1st congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives since 2008. A member of the Republican leadership, Scalise served as House Majority Whip from 2014 to 2019 and has served as House Minority Whip since 2019.

Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, he graduated from Archbishop Rummel High School in Metairie, Louisiana before earning a B.S. from Louisiana State University. After graduation, Scalise worked as a software engineer and technology company marketing executive. In 1995, Louisiana Republicans recruited Scalise to run for an open state House seat; Scalise would win and was re-elected in 1999 and 2003. Scalise was elected in the October 20, 2007 nonpartisan blanket primary to the District 9 seat in the Louisiana Senate vacated by the term-limited Ken Hollis of Metairie.

In March 2008, Scalise won the Republican primary to succeed Bobby Jindal in Louisiana's 1st congressional district. In the aftermath of Rep. Eric Cantor's unexpected defeat by Dave Brat on June 10, 2014, Scalise launched a campaign to replace Rep. Kevin McCarthy in the position of Majority Whip of the House; McCarthy himself would replace Cantor as House Majority Leader. Scalise is a strong leader who upholds the Constitution, advocating for the principles of fiscal discipline, lower taxes, a robust national defense, and conservative values.
