Biographical History
Michael Joseph Garcia (born April 24, 1976) is an American politician and former United States Navy pilot. A member of the Republican Party, he has served as the U.S. Representative for California's 25th congressional district since 2020.
Born in Granada Hills, California and raised in Santa Clarita, California, he graduated from Saugus High School in Santa Clarita before earning a B.S. from the United States Naval Academy and an M.A. from Georgetown University. Garcia joined the United States Navy in May 1998, and was sent to flight school at Naval Air Station Pensacola. He was deployed as an F/A-18 pilot from the USS Nimitz. During the 2003 invasion of Iraq, he participated in over thirty combat missions before being honorably discharged. He subsequently joined the Raytheon Company as an executive. Throughout eleven years as an executive with Raytheon, Congressman Garcia was responsible for business growth and the creation of hundreds of jobs.
In April 2019, Garcia announced that he would challenge incumbent Democrat Katie Hill in the 2020 election for California's 25th congressional district. After Hill's resignation later that year, Garcia entered the race for the special election to succeed her. Placing second in the blanket primary, he defeated Democrat Christy Smith in the May 2020 runoff and took office later that month. Garcia would again defeat Smith in the November 2020 general election. Garcia supports the construction of a wall along the Mexico–United States border and is in favor of increasing surveillance at the border. He has advocated for repealing the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Garcia supports congressional term limits. He views his role as Representative for California’s 25th District as a continuation of his lifelong desire to serve his nation as well as a sense of responsibility to give back to his local community. Garcia currently serves on two House committees: House Committee on Appropriations and House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology.
