Biographical History

Salud Ortiz Carbajal is an American politician. A member of the Democratic Party, he has served as the U.S. Representative for California's 24th congressional district since 2017.

Born in Moroleón, Guanajuato, Mexico, he immigrated with his family to the United States as a child, ultimately settling in Oxnard, California. Carbajal attended the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he earned a bachelor's degree, and Fielding Graduate University, where he earned a master's degree in organizational management. Carbajal served in the United States Marine Corps Reserve for eight years, including during the Gulf War. He worked for the Santa Barbara County public health department for several years. He served on the staff of Santa Barbara County supervisor Naomi Schwartz from 1993 until 2004. In 2004, he was elected to replace Schwartz on the Santa Barbara County board of supervisors, representing the first district from 2005 until 2017.

In 2015, Carbajal announced his intentions to run for the 24th district, after incumbent Democrat Lois Capps announced her retirement. He placed first in the open primary and defeated Republican Justin Fareed in the general election. Carbajal has been re-elected twice. In Congress, he has demonstrated a strong commitment to protecting our natural environment and resources, enhancing public safety, creating economic opportunities, and working to address our transportation, housing, and workforce challenges across his district. Carbajak serves as Vice Chair for the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure and is a member of the Committee on Armed Services and the Committee on Agriculture.
