Biographical History

Christopher Charles John (born January 5, 1960) is an American politician. A member of the Democratic Party, he served as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives representing Louisiana's 7th congressional district from 1997 to 2005.

Born in Crowley, Louisiana, he attended Notre Dame Catholic High School in Crowley before earning a B.A. from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. From 1974 to 1982, he served as an aide to his father, Louisiana State Representative John N. John, Jr. In 1984, he was elected to the Crowley City Council; four years later, he was elected to the Louisiana House of Representatives, filling the seat once held by his father. In 1995, he lost his bid to become lieutenant governor of Louisiana. In 1996, John was elected to Congress. He defeated fellow Democrat Hunter Lundy in a runoff for the 7th district seat. In 2004, John surrendered his House seat to run for the seat in the U.S. Senate being vacated by popular Democrat and fellow Crowley native John Breaux, who endorsed him. John was defeated by Republican David Vitter.

After his House career ended, John worked for two years as a lobbyist for the U.S. Oil & Gas Association in Washington, D.C. In August 2007, he was named president of the Louisiana Mid-Continent Oil & Gas Association (LMOGA). In this role, he pushed for laws and tax rules that favored the energy industry, one of the state’s largest employers. John stepped down from the LMOGA at the end of 2018.
