Biographical History
Subramanian Raja Krishnamoorthi (born July 19, 1973) is an American politician. A member of the Democratic Party, he has served as the U.S. Representative from Illinois's 8th congressional district since 2017.
Born in New Delhi, India, he moved with his family to Buffalo, New York when he was three months old. In 1980, his family moved to Peoria, Illinois where Krishnamoorthi graduated from Richwoods High School. Thereafter, he earned a B.A. from Princeton University and a J.D. from Harvard Law School. After graduating from Harvard, Krishnamoorthi served as a law clerk for Joan B. Gottschall and worked on Barack Obama's 2000 election campaign for the United States House of Representatives. He also served as an issues director for Obama's 2004 campaign for the United States Senate, and aided in the development of Obama's 2004 Democratic National Convention keynote address. After being appointed to the Board of the Illinois Housing Development Authority, Krishnamoorthi practiced law and then served as a special assistant attorney general, helping start the state's anti-corruption unit under Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan. He served as deputy state treasurer for Illinois Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias from 2007 to 2009 and then as Vice-Chairman of the Illinois Innovation Council. He was the president of high-tech small businesses in the Chicago area until he resigned before entering Congress to eliminate any conflicts of interest. In 2010, he was an unsuccessful candidate for Illinois state comptroller; in 2012, he ran for the Democratic nomination for the U.S. House of Representatives seat in Illinois's 8th congressional district, losing to Tammy Duckworth.
When Duckworth ran for the U.S. Senate in 2016, Krishnamoorthi again declared his candidacy for the U.S. House of Representatives, winning the Democratic primary and the general election. In Congress, he serves on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, the Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis, the Committee on Oversight and Reform and as Chairman of its Subcommittee on Economic and Consumer Policy, Vice-Chair of the LGBTQ+ Equality Caucus, Co-Chair of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus Immigration Task Force, and as an Assistant Whip for the Democratic caucus.
