Biographical History

Helen Hill Miller, economist and writer, daughter of Russell Day and Lucia (Elliott) Hill was born in Lake Forest, Illinois. She received her A.B. from Bryn Mawr in 1921, Diploma in Economics and Political Science from Oxford in 1922 and Ph.D from the University of Chicago in 1928. She married Francis Pickens Miller in 1927. For three summers (1921, 1923, 1926) she tutored at the Bryn Mawr Summer School for Women Workers in Industry and from 1927-1930 she travelled and studied in Europe. Miller was a freelance writer, 1930-1934, and a writer on the staff of the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture, 1934-1940, Executive Director of the National Policy Committee, 1941-1947, American Editorial representative of the Economist, 1943-1950, and Washington Bureau correspondent of Newsweek, 1950-1952. She was employed as staff writer for the President's Commission on the Status of Women, 1960-1962, and was member and President 1955-1956, of the Women's National Press Club. Additionally Miller wrote articles on history and economics for the Atlantic Monthly, Virginia Quarterly and other journals, and wrote biography, history and travel books.
