Biographical History

Alice Costandina Titus (born May 23, 1950) is an American politician. A member of the Democratric Party, she has served as the U.S. Representative for Nevada's 1st congressional district since 2013. She previously served as U.S. Representative for Nevada's 3rd congressional district from 2009 to 2011, when she was defeated by Joe Heck.

Born in Thomasville, Georgia and raised in Tifton, Georgia, Titus attended a summer program at The College of William & Mary and was admitted full-time for the fall without a high school diploma. There she earned her bachelor's degree in political science. Titus went on to earn a master's degree from the University of Georgia and a Ph.D. from Florida State University. After a year teaching at North Texas State University, Titus moved to Nevada for a faculty position in the political science department at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. She created and continues to coordinate UNLV's Legislative Internship Program, which gives students an opportunity to work at the state legislature. In 1988, she was elected to the Nevada Senate, representing the 7th district for there twenty years. In 2006, Titus received the Democratic nomination for Governor of Nevada, losing to Republican Jim Gibbons.

In 2008, Titus was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from Nevada's 3rd congressional district; she narrowly lost her seat in 2010. In 2012, Titus was the Democratic nominee in Nevada's 1st congressional district, where her home had been placed due to redistricting. Currently in her sixth term in the U.S. House of Representatives, Titus is the dean of Nevada’s Congressional delegation. She is a proud member of the House Committees on Transportation and Infrastructure, Foreign Affairs, and Homeland Security. In 2018, Titus was elected to become the Chair of a key Transportation and Infrastructure Subcommittee, where she works to help Nevada’s communities better respond to natural disasters, address the devastating impacts of climate change, and fight for infrastructure projects that will benefit the most vulnerable. After helping the Las Vegas community recover from the deadliest shooting in modern American history, Dina has emerged as one of the leading voices in Congress for substantive action to reduce gun violence. She is a strong advocate for the DREAM Act and comprehensive immigration reform. An expert on matters of nuclear energy and waste, Dina leads the effort in Congress to oppose the revitalization of Yucca Mountain.
