Biographical History
Epithet: of Add MS 33546
James Silk Buckingham was an English adventurer, publisher, author, and activist. He started his career as a sailor and adventurer, chiefly in the Middle East, then started the Calcutta Journal; after it was suppressed by the government, he received monetary compensation and returned to London. He published books about his travels, started several journals, then won a seat in Parliament, where he focused on military reform and the temperance movement. He then toured North America, lecturing about experiences in the Middle East culled from his earlier books, and later travelled throughout Europe. In addition to publishing books about his travels, Buckingham wrote numerous pamphlets about a wide variety of topics.
