Biographical History
Born in 1814 in St. John's Parish, South Carolina; Educated in South Carolina private schools and South Carolina College, now the University of South Carolina; one of the few distinguished botanists of his time and received international acclaim for his research on non-flowering plants, Cryptogams. His earlier interest was Phaenogams, flowering plants. His collections were given to the Charleston Museum and Converse College in Spartanburg, S.C.
Plantation owner and botanist of Berkeley County and Aiken, S.C. His first wife was Elizabeth G. Snowden; he married second Mary H. Dawson. He was the son of Dr. Henry Ravenel (1790-1867), a physician and owner of Pooshee Plantation (Berkeley County, S.C.). Dr. Henry Ravenel (1790-1867) was the son of Rene Ravenel (1762-1822) of Pooshee, who had a brother named Henry Ravenel (1729-1785), known as Henry of Hanover (Plantation). Henry of Hanover also had a son named Henry Ravenel (1751-1823).
Planter, botanist, and scientist of Berkeley and Aiken County, S.C.; secretary and treasurer of S.C. Canal & Railroad Company; husband of Elizabeth Gilliard and Mary Huger Ravenel; son of Henry and Catherine Stevens Ravenel; brother-in-law of Richard Y. Dwight.
