Nathaniel M. Sage

PEACE DALE, R.I. - Nathaniel McLean Sage, 86, a geologist and research administrator, died Friday, Jan. 14, 2005, of heart failure at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

Dr. Sage was a professor of geology at Amherst College before teaching at the University of New Hampshire. He then worked with the Division of Sponsored Research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, before becoming the director of research at the University of Rhode Island, from which he retired in 1983.

Dr. Sage was a graduate of the Pomfret School in Pomfret, Conn., and he attended Saint Columba’s College in Dublin, Ireland, on an english speaking union exchange program. He graduated from MIT in 1941 and later returned to complete his Ph.D., concentrating on the geology of Mahone Bay in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. He taught for three summers at the MIT summer geology camp there.

He was a member of the Coast Artillery of the U.S. Army, serving two years in Iceland before entering the European theatre and serving in England, France and Germany. He left service as a captain.

Dr. Sage was the son of the late Nathaniel McLean Sage and Charlotte (Simonds) Sage of Brookline, Mass. He leaves his wife of 32 years, Dorothy (Blair) Sage of Peace Dale. He was predeceased by his wife, Anne Sturgis Barker, the mother of Carol McCombe of Portsmouth, N.H., Elizabeth Barker-Berdge of El Cerrito, Calif., Timothy Barker of Kamuela, Hawaii, Anne Sage Hannegan of Peace Dale and Jennifer Sage Evetts of Blebo Craigs, Scotland. He leaves 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Mary Shakespeare of Brookline, Barbara Marshall of Swarthmore, Pa., and Anne Saxton of West Sand Lake, N.Y. He was also the brother of the late Elizabeth Case of Harrisburg, Pa.

Dr. Sage was an avid traveler, an enthusiastic sailor, a hockey player at MIT and later had a brief professional stint with the Rhode Island Reds. He was most happy being a gentleman farmer and had been a generous host to foreign students from many parts of the world.

A memorial service will take place in the spring for his family and his friends.
