Biographical History
Elizabeth Kraus Hartline (September 17, 1909 - July 31, 2001) was an environmental activist who worked to preserve almost 40,000 acres in Maryland wildlands. She was born on September 17, 1909 in Newton, Massachusetts to Charles A. Kraus and Elizabeth Schaefer. In 1936, she married Haldan Keffer Hartline.
Hartline was known for her efforts to preserve wilderness environments and wildlands in Maryland. She founded the Maryland Wildlands Committee in 1971, which led to a law enabling the establishment of designated state wilderness areas in Maryland in 1971. She co-chaired the Maryland Wildlands Committee with Alice Eastman beginning in 1988. The Hartline-Eastman Wildland in Hereford, Maryland was named after her and Eastman in 1996.
With her husband, she was also known for her haiku compositions. Hartline died in Beverley, Massachusetts on July 31, 2001.
