Biographical History

Martin Joseph Walsh (born April 10, 1967) is an American politician serving as the 29th United States Secretary of Labor.

A native of the Dorchester neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts, he graduated from The Newman School before joining the Laborers' Union Local 223, eventually serving as its president. He was elected secretary-treasurer and general agent of the Boston Metropolitan District Building Trades Council, a union umbrella group, in the fall of 2010. In 2011, Walsh was named head of the Boston Building Trades, serving in that role until 2013.

Walsh was elected to the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 1997, representing the Thirteenth district of Suffolk County. In April 2013, Walsh announced he would run for Mayor of Boston in the 2013 mayoral election. That September, Walsh placed first among twelve candidates in the mayoral preliminary election, advancing to the general election; Walsh was narrowly elected and sworn into office in January 2014. In July 2017, Walsh announced he would seek a second term; he again placed first in the preliminary election and was re-elected that November, being sworn into his second term by former Vice President Joe Biden.

President-Elect Biden nominated Walsh to be Secretary of Labor on January 7, 2021. Walsh was confirmed by the United States Senate for the position by a 68–29 vote on March 22, 2021, becoming the final member of Biden's Cabinet to be confirmed. He resigned his mayoralty that day and was sworn into office as Secretary of Labor by Vice President Kamala Harris on March 23.
