Biographical History

Ritchie John Torres (born March 12, 1988) is an American politician serving as the U.S. representative for New York's 15th congressional district since 2021. He is a member of the Democratic Party.

A native of the Bronx, Torres attended Herbert H. Lehman High School before enrolling at New York University, dropping out at the beginning of his sophomore year. After dropping out, Torres worked for New York City Council member James Vacca, eventually becoming Vacca's housing director. In 2013, Torres ran to succeed Joel Rivera as the councilmember for the 15th district of the New York City Council. Winning the Democratic Party nomination and general election, Torres became the first openly gay as well as the youngest elected public official in the Bronx. He served as a councilman from 2014 to 2020.

In March 2019, Torres expressed interest in running against incumbent congressman José E. Serrano in New York's 15th congressional district; after Serrano announced his retirement, Torres announced his bid for the seat. Victorious in the five-way primary, Torres was easily elected in the general election for the heavily Democratic district. Along with Mondaire Jones from New York's 17th congressional district, Torres is one of the first openly gay Black members of Congress. Torres is also the first openly gay Afro Latino elected to Congress.
