Biographical History

Linda Thomas-Greenfield (born 1952) is an American diplomat who is the United States Ambassador to the United Nations under President Joe Biden. A member of the Democratic Party, she served as the United States Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs from 2013 to 2017. Thomas-Greenfield then served in the private sector as a senior vice president at Albright Stonebridge Group in Washington, D.C. and as as fellow at Georgetown University.

President Biden nominated her to be the United States Ambassador to the United Nations, and she was confirmed by the United States Senate on February 23, 2021. She took office after presenting her credentials on February 25, 2021.

Her Foreign Service career, lasting from 1982 to 2017, included an ambassadorship to Liberia (2008-2012), and foreign postings in Switzerland (at the U.S. Mission to the United Nations), Pakistan, Kenya, The Gambia, Nigeria, and Jamaica. In addition to the Bureau of Human Resources, her Washington postings include the Bureau of African Affairs (2006-2008) where she served as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary, and the Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration (2004-2006) where she served as Deputy Assistant Secretary.

Born in Baker, Louisiana in 1952, Thomas-Greenfield earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Louisiana State University in 1974 and a Master of Public Administration from the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 1975. She taught political science at Bucknell University before joining the Foreign Service in 1982.
