Biographical History

Smyth received his Ph.D. from Stanford University, Department of Chemistry, in 1972. After a postdoctoral position of two years at Bell Laboratories he worked from 1974 to his retirement in 1996 at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (formerly the National Bureau of Standards). From 1981 to 1996 he was an advisor of National Research Council Postdoctoral Associates, and from 1994 to 1998, an adjunct professor at Pennsylvania State University, lecturing primarily on combusion diagnostics and soot formation processes. In the period 1985-1996 much of his effort concentrated on making detailed measurements of diffusion flame structure.
