Biographical History

In 1802, George Washington Parke Custis inherited 1,100-acres from his father, John Parke Custis, and established Arlington Plantation, which contains the home he built, "Arlington House." His daughter, Mary Anna Randolph Custis, married Robert E. Lee, and they inherited Arlington House and the plantation surrounding it in 1857. The property was confiscated by the federal government during the Civil War.
