Born in Central City, Nebraska, his early childhood was itinerant and unsettled, inculcating him with an appreciation for the lives of ordinary Americans. He attended several colleges, never taking a degree, and joined the Lost Generation of American artists in Europe. He created and exhibited photo-texts, character sketches accompanied by photographs, and began writing novels. His work was valued by other writers and he received numerous grants, fellowships, and awards, but seldom enjoyed popular attention.
