Biographical History

Edward Randolph was a royal office holder who spent most of his service in America. He played a role in the revocation of the Massachusetts charter and held several offices within the Dominion of New England. In 1692, Randolph came to Virginia as surveyor-general of customs. He worked tirelessly to shore up the collection of His Majesty's customs. His report on illegal trade in America heavily influenced the Navigation Act of 1696.

From the description of An Account of generall things, whereby the illegall trade is encouraged in Virginia, Maryland, & Pensilvania, together [with] methods for prevention thereof, humbly offered to the ... consideration of the hon[ora]ble the Commissioners of his Ma[jes]ties Customs, 1695 / by Edward Randolph Surveyor Generall. As a result, he attempted to have the colony's charter annulled and was instrumental in the establishment of the regime of Governor Edmund Andros (1673-1714).
