William Holman Hunt, English Pre-Raphaelite painter.
William Holman Hunt was an English artist and painter. Despite his father's objections, he sought a career as an artist, and studied art at the Royal Academy, where he met Millais and Rossetti; the three of them co-founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. Hunt's paintings are richly colored and highly detailed; many have religious or moralistic connotations. He made several journeys to the Middle East, and painted scenes of Jerusalem. He was extremely popular with the general public.
William Holman Hunt (1827-1910) was a painter of the pre-Raphaelite school. For a full account of his life and works see the Dictionary of National Biography
William Holman Hunt was a British painter. In 1843, while attending lectures at the Royal Academy Schools, he met Sir John Everett Millais, who, together with Hunt and Dante Gabriel Rossetti, formed the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. They sought to revitalize art by emphasizing the detailed observation of the natural world in a spirit of quasi-religious devotion to truth. Although the Pre-Raphaelites broke up in 1852, Hunt remained loyal to that style until his death in 1910.
William Holman Hunt (1827-1910), painter and founder, with J.E. Millais and D.G. Rossetti, of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, was born on 2 Apr. 1827. By 1860 he had established a reputation as a painter, especially of religious subjects, and had spent two years in Palestine (1854-1856). In 1856 he married Fanny Waugh and set out for the East, but was detained by quarantine regulations in Florence, where his wife died in 1866. After several years in Italy and Palestine he returned to London in 1871 and remained there until 1875, when he went back to Palestine, after marrying his first wife's sister Marion Waugh in Switzerland. He returned to England in 1878 and received the Order of Merit in 1905. He died on 7 Sep. 1910 and was buried in St Paul's Cathedral.
Henry Virtue Tebbs was a writer on religious subjects.
