Biographical History

Presidential secretary, U.S. army officer, industrialist, philanthropist, and civic leader, of Spiegel Grove (Fremont) and Cleveland, Ohio; second son of Rutherford B. Hayes and Lucy Webb Hayes; attended Cornell University, leaving to serve as his father's secretary (both as Ohio governor and U.S. president); treasurer of Whipple Manufacturing Company and official of National Carbon Company (later known as Union Carbide); member of First Cleveland Troop (Troop A), Ohio National Guard; mustered into U.S. service at outbreak of Spanish American War and received the Medal of Honor for heroism during the Philippine Insurrection; also participated in the Boxer Rebellion, China Relief Expedition, and Russo-Japanese War; married Mary Otis Miller Brinkerhoff.
