Biographical History

Baron George Hoyningen-Huene was born in St. Petersburg, Russia on September 4, 1900. His father was a Russian cavalry officer and his mother was an American Ambassador's daughter. Hoyningen-Huene was brought to England in 1917, and left there for Istanbul in British uniform in 1919 as an interpreter to General Briggs. He returned to joined his family in Biarritz in 1921 and then took an apartment in Paris and took up photography and sketching for his dressmaking sister. He became head photographer for Vogue then Harpers Bazaar, coming to the United States in the 1935 and becoming an American citizen. He was one of the leading fashion photographers of his time. He traveled extensively, producing books on his trips to Africa, Greece, Egypt, Spain, and Mexico. He moved to Hollywood in 1946, first teaching photography at Art Center School and then working in the film industry, mainly with George Cukor, on such films as A Star Is Born (1954) (special color design advisor), Bhowani Junction (1956) (color consultant), A Breath of Scandal (1960) (color advisor, Costume Designer), and Heller in Pink Tights (1960) (color co-ordinator and technical advisor). He also designed homes and gardens. Hoyningen-Huene died in Los Angeles, CA on September 12, 1968.
