James C. Baker was pastor of Trinity Church (Methodist Episcopal) in Urbana, Illinois who worked to oust John A. Patten from his influential position in the church, and to stop the sale of Patten's medicine.

John A. Patten manufactured Wine of Cardui, a nostrum composed of a mixture that was alleged to be 29 per cent alcohol.
