Biographical History

Jane Means Appleton Pierce (b. Mar. 12, 1806, Hampton, NH–d. Dec. 2, 1863, Andover, MA) was the daughter of Reverend Jesse Appleton and Elizabeth Means-Appleton. She married Franklin Pierce, future President of the United States in 1834. The couple had three children, all of whom died young. She detested Washington, DC and hated being a political wife and Franklin turned down several high ranking positions when she asked.
