Levin, Fay Hartog, 1948-

<p>Fay Hartog-Levin (born 1948) is an American lawyer, consultant, and diplomat. She is a former United States Ambassador to the Netherlands, from 2009 to 2011.</p>

<p>Fay Hartog was born in the United States. Her parents Ada and Jo Hartog were Dutch Jews that fled from the Netherlands to Suriname in 1942 and emigrated to the United States in 1948, shortly before she was born. She studied Russian language and literature at Northwestern University and law at Loyola University Chicago School of Law. For over twenty years, she worked as a lawyer. She was an attorney and executive of the Field Museum in Chicago and she was a consultant for the Res Publica Group. She is married to Daniel Levin, and she is the mother of two children.</p>

<p>In 2009, she succeeded James Culbertson and became the 65th United States Ambassador to the Netherlands in The Hague. She presented her credentials to Queen Beatrix on August 19, 2009. She resigned her post in September 2011. On April 26, 2018, Ambassador Levin was inducted as an officer into the Order of Orange Nassau for her longstanding commitment to strengthening the bilateral relationship between the Netherlands and the United States as part of the King’s Day celebration. "Ambassador Fay Hartog-Levin is an American who is deeply rooted in her Dutch heritage. Her commitment to a strong bilateral relationship between the birthplace of her parents and her home is exemplary," said Ambassador Henne Schuwer. "She graciously gives her expertise, support and friendship to make the Netherlands and the United States better places, be it assisting in the visit of King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima to Chicago in 2015 or facilitating student exchange programs to the Netherlands, the Dutch have a great friend in Ambassador Hartog-Levin."</p>

<p>Ambassador Fay Hartog-Levin (Ret.) has served as a Trustee of the Weinberg Foundation since May of 2016. Ambassador Levin is a Distinguished Fellow at the Chicago Council on Global Affairs. She has been a Lecturer at the University of Chicago Law School since 2013.</p>

<p>Levin was the 65th Ambassador of the United States of America to the Kingdom of the Netherlands from 2009-2011. Her parents were Dutch Jews who fled from the Netherlands to Suriname in 1942 and immigrated to the US in 1948, shortly before she was born.</p>

<p>Ambassador Levin’s prior professional roles include serving as a senior consultant at Res Publica Group, Vice President for External Affairs at the Field Museum, and a legal advisor to the Illinois State Board of Education. Her professional career includes 20 years in private practice representing primarily school boards, private and public colleges, and social service agencies. Ambassador Levin holds, or has held, numerous board positions with organizations, including the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, WWCI (WTTW-WFMT), the Harris Public Policy School of the University of Chicago, the East Bank Club, the Chicago Advisory Board of U.S. Bank, DePaul University, Columbia College Chicago, the Merit School of Music, the Buck Institute for Research on Aging (Novato, CA), the Foundation for the National Archives (Washington, DC), and the Roosevelt Institute (New York, NY). She has served as a member of and chaired the Arts Alliance Illinois Board of Directors.</p>

<p>Ambassador Levin is a graduate of Northwestern University with a degree in Russian language and literature. She received her JD from Loyola University School of Law. She holds an honorary LLM from Knox College. She resides in Winnetka, Illinois with her husband, Daniel Levin, Chairman of The Habitat Company and is the mother of two children and two grandchildren.</p>
